Mandarich (and what if...?)

As we near spectacle that is now the NFL draft, great article on espn.com today regarding Tony Mandarich:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4073575

They mention which I forgot -- Dallas passed on him with the #1 overall pick and took Aikman. Obviously the "franchise QB" vs. Offensive lineman debate could be made, but just WHAT IF...?

What if Dallas had followed the hype surrounding Mandarich and drafted him BEFORE Aikman with the first overall pick? In this day and age, that is not too unrealistic a scenario -- teams would surely draft an O-Lineman first overall, especially someone who was supposed to be the "best ever."

Dallas went on to win THREE Superbowls with the triplet dynasty of Aikman, Irvin, and Smith. I imagine that all wouldn't have happened had Dallas selected Mandarich and NFL history would have been COMPLETELY RE-WRITTEN based on one decision made in one war room. Maybe it was a no-brainer -- although from what I remember Aikman wasn't necessarily a guaranteed overall #1 pick, but I could be wrong on that.

Amazing if you think about it...
