Bastard-o Impressive in First MLB Start...

I'm back! Been a while since my last post.

In this forum we have occasionally covered Minor League prospects for the Phils and Nats. Here was my post in Aprilon Antonio Bastardo, who was called earlier this week and last night pitched very impressively for a win in his MLB debut with a nice 6IP, 4H, 1BB, 5K performance; we'll see how well he fares in the polar-opposite ballpark in Philly.

Antonio Bastardo, amateur free agent (Dominican Republic):
Another southpaw, Bastard-o is interesting because I love his name, but also because he was invited to Phils spring camp in Clearwater. He dominated in Clearwater (A) last year, was promoted to Reading in the second half of '08, and is still in Reading. In the early going he seems to continue to progress -- in five games (1 GS), he's racked up a 1-0, 0.73 ERA 11 K in 12 IP line and a miniscule 0.56 WHIP; opponents are hitting a dismal .146 against him. I see Bastardo as a potential relief call up if Eyre or the awful SF Giants pickup continue to falter or get hurt.

The Phils also have promoted Kyle Drabek, and apparently are generating some interest in some corner outfield prospects who are playing well in both Reading (Michael Taylor -- .341, 9 HR, 38 RBI, and 1.001 OPS in 46 games in Reading) and Clearwater (Dominic Brown (apparent comparisons to Darryl Strawberry to swing and body type) -- .317, 6 HR, 33 RBI, and .941 OPS in weak hitting single-A FSL.)

Perhaps you'll see those names in a few months crop up again when it's time for the Phighten's to solidify their starting rotation for the stretch run.
